ROCK HILL, SC (March 5) – The University of Connecticut men’s golf team
shaved 11 strokes off its first round score in Tuesday’s final round of play at
the Winthrop-Waterford Invitational, though the Huskies failed to improve in the
standings and finished 15th in the 19-team field. Winthrop University won the
tournament by shooting a combined 585, including a team-best 285 in the final
round.
The Huskies, making their spring debut, shot a combined 315 on the day.
Senior Sean Vigue (Lebanon, CT) led the team over the two-day tournament and
shot 77 (+5) on the day to finish tied for 24th place with a 153. Freshman
Justin Ciombor (Plainville, MA) carded the best round of his career, a
six-over-par 78, to finish tied with two others for 52nd place with a score of
160. Junior Nate Thomsen (Rocky Hill, CT) fired back-to-back rounds of 80 over
the tournament to finish tied for 64th, and senior Kevin O’Connor (East Lyme,
CT) and freshman Mike Murphy (Woburn, MA) each finished with scores of 166.
Elon's Mark Hunsicker was the individual medalist. He shot a final
round 70 to hold off Winthrop's Matt Johnson by a stroke and finished with a 141
for the tournament.
UConn will be back in action on March 18 at the University of San Diego
Invitational in San Diego, CA.
