PROVIDENCE, RI (April 14) - The University of Connecticut men’s golf team slipped a place on the final day at the New England Division I Championship on Sunday to finish in fifth with a two-day score of 617 at the Triggs Memorial Golf Club. Rhode Island won the tournament with a combined score of 603, ahead of Central Connecticut (608), Army (610) and Yale (611).

Central Connecticut’s Michael Welch took individual medalist honors and was the only player to shoot under par for the tournament with a 142 (-2). Rhode Island’s David Spitz placed second with a 148 (+4), and three players–including UConn’s Sean Vigue (Lebanon, CT)–tied for third a shot back at 149 (+5).

Vigue bettered his Saturday round of 75 by a stroke, carding a 74 in the final round to pace the Huskies. He has been Connecticut’s top finisher in every tournament this spring.

Senior Kevin O’Connor (East Lyme, CT) and freshman Justin Ciombor (Plainville, MA) each shot a 158 (+14) for the tournament to tie for 35th overall with three others. Both slipped in the final round, with O’Connor posting an 83 after shooting 75 the previous day and Ciombor following Saturday’s round of 78 with an 80.

Senior Kevin Coghlan (Northridge, CA) finished tied for 47th place with a score of 160 (+16) over the weekend. He shaved 12 strokes from his Saturday effort to card a 74 in the final round. Freshman Mike Murphy (Woburn, MA) rounded out UConn’s scoring with a 161 (+17) to finish tied for 49th overall. His final-round 78 was five strokes better than his first-round score.

Connecticut will find out on Monday, April 15, if it qualified for the BIG EAST Championship. This year’s championship will be held in South Bend, IN, from April 19-21.
