PORTSMOUTH, RI (April 27) – The University of Connecticut golf team gained a spot on the final day of the University of Rhode Island Spring Invitational, though the Huskies finished a mere six strokes behind the Rams and claimed the runner-up spot with a two-round score of 615.

In third place behind URI and Army entering the final round, UConn shaved 19 shots off its Friday score of 317 to card a a 298 on Saturday. Only the Rams fared better on the day, shooting a tournament-best round of 297. Though every UConn golfer carded a lower score than the previous day, Rhode Island continued its four-year unbeaten streak in New England in the 18-team field.

Rhode Island’s Jason Lockwood edged UConn senior Sean Vigue (Lebanon, CT) for individual medalist honors. Vigue came into the final round tied for fifth overall after firing a 77 on Friday and gave Lockwood, the overall leader after the first day, a run for his money. Vigue carded an even-par 71 but fell two strokes shy of the overall title, finishing in second place with a score of 148.

Freshman Justin Ciombor (Plainville, MA) continued his inspired play of late with a final-round 75 to finish in eighth place overall with a score of 155. Ciombor, competing in his fifth tournament of the spring, has finished or tied for second on the team the last three tournament.

Freshman Mike Murphy (Woburn, MA) tied for ninth place overall and bettered his Friday score by two strokes with a final-round 77. Seniors Kevin Coghlan (Northridge, CA) and Kevin O’Connor (East Lyme, CT) finished tied for 17th with scores of 158. Each carded better scores in the final round, with Coghlan bettering his 81 with a 77 and O’Connor trimming eight strokes off his 83 on Friday to shoot 75 on Saturday.

The URI Invitational was the last scheduled tournament for the Huskies this spring. The NCAA Regionals will be held on May 16-18.
