Tabs UConn Preseason No. 1

STORRS, CT (Nov. 6, 2001) -- The University of Connecticut women’s basketball team claimed number one in the preseason AP poll, released Tuesday. Receiving 31 of a possible 45 first-place votes, UConn garnered 1,102 points for its third consecutive and fourth overall AP preseason No. 1 ranking.

Tennessee, whom the Huskies will face in Knoxville, TN, Jan. 5, was second with 1,032 points and five first-place votes. No. 3 Vanderbilt received six first-place votes, while No. 4 Oklahoma and No. 5 Duke split the remainder of the first-place votes, with the Sooners receiving two and the Blue Devils getting one.

Louisiana Tech, Texas Tech, Iowa State, Stanford and North Carolina State rounded out the top ten, respectively.

2001 NCAA Champion Notre Dame was the only other BIG EAST school represented in the top 25. The Fighting Irish are ranked No. 15.

UConn is also preseason No. 1 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Preseason Poll, released yesterday.
