STORRS, CT (Nov. 2, 2001) -- Four starters scored in double figures as the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team used a balanced attack to roll over the Houston Jaguars, 87-45, in exhibition action Friday night at Gampel Pavilion. Seniors Swin Cash (McKeesport, PA) and Asjha Jones (Piscataway, NJ) led the Huskies with 17 points apiece while sophomore Diana Taurasi (Chino, CA) added 15 points and a game-high nine assists.

Taurasi opened the game for the Huskies on a jumper 13 seconds into the first half. Houston would match UConn for the next three minutes before senior Sue Bird (Syosset, NY) nailed her first three-pointer of the season at the 16:49 mark to start a 22-2 UConn run. The Huskies never looked back, taking a 44-26 lead into halftime. Bird had 12 of her 14 points in the first half of play.

Connecticut opened the second half on a 12-0 run before Erin Buescher of the Jaguars responded with a three-pointer to put the game at 56-29. Buescher finished with nine points and five rebounds while Katrina Colleton was the only Jaguar in double-figures with 15 points. Tatum Brown posted eight rebounds for Houston.

Jones led the rebounding column for UConn with 12 rebounds.

Connecticut’s next game is against Gustino Powerbasket at 7:30 p.m. Monday night, Nov. 5, at Gampel Pavilion. It will be the last exhibition game for the Huskies, who open regular season play against Fairfield Nov. 9 in the preseason WNIT.
