Huskies Overwhelm Wake Forest, 88-38, in First Road Contest

Box score

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (Nov. 26, 2001) -- In its first road contest of the season, the No. 1 University of Connecticut women’s basketball team overwhelmed ACC foe Wake Forest, 88-38, Monday night in Winston-Salem, NC. Senior Swin Cash (McKeesport, PA) and sophomore Diana Taurasi (Chino, CA) each had 14 points to pace the Huskies, who improve to 6-0 this season.

UConn stormed to an early 6-point lead off two three-pointers by Taurasi and opened up a 10-0 spread before Wake Forest could claim its first basket on a jumper by sophomore standout Eafton Hill at the 17:08 mark. The Huskies then went on a devastating 29-4 run to put the game out of reach for the Demon Deacons.

Frustrated by the vaulted UConn defense, Wake Forest did not reach double-digit points until two free throws by Erin Ferrell made the score 41-11 at the 7:13 mark. Connecticut held the Demon Deacons to a first half field-goal percentage of 23.3 while shooting 70.4 from the field for itself in the half. The halftime score was 50-18.

In the second half, the Husky offense cooled down to a 43.8 percentage from the field, but Wake Forest never mounted a serious run, enabling UConn to cruise to the 50-point victory.

For the game, Wake Forest shot only 24.2 from the field and coughed up 20 turnovers. UConn posted 15 steals as a team, including four apiece from seniors Asjha Jones (Piscataway, NJ) and Sue Bird (Syosset, NY).

All five of UConn’s starters finished in double figures. Cash narrowly missed her fifth double-double of the season with a team-high 14 points and nine boards. Taurasi was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, including four three-pointers, en route to 14 points and five assists. Bird also dished out seven assists with no turnovers to go along with her 12 points.

For the Demon Deacons, who fall to 2-2 this season, Hill registered 10 points while Tracy Alston grabbed 10 boards.

UConn returns to action this Friday, Nov. 30, in a home contest against Ball State. Gametime is 7:30 p.m. at Gampel Pavilion.
