STORRS, CT (Dec. 27, 2001) -- Making her first career start, redshirt
freshman Jessica Moore (Palmer, AK) led six Husky players in double figures with
a game-high 21 points as the No. 1 University of Connecticut women’s basketball
team rolled over Cal State Northridge, 101-44, Thursday night at Gampel
Pavilion. Seniors Swin Cash (McKeesport, PA) and Asjha Jones (Piscataway, NJ)
added double-doubles for UConn, who improved to 12-0 this season.
UConn opened the game with a quick start, posting eight unanswered points
before Denise Cardenas put the Matadors on the board with a jumper at the 18:01
mark.
Behind the post play of Moore and Cash, UConn opened a 28-point lead with the
score 42-14 at the 5:09 mark in the first half. Moore finished with 12 points in
the first half while Cash had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Cal State Northridge responded with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 23 points
with 3:44 remaining in the first half, but the Huskies closed out the half with
a 12-2 run of their own, bringing the halftime score to 54-21 and tying their
largest lead of the half at the 33 points.
The story of the second half was Jones, who posted 11 points in a 32-11 run
to make the score 86-32 with 8:05 remaining. Jones finished with a season-high
20 points and 12 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double.
The UConn lead eventually reached 58 points with the score 99-41 at the 1:51
mark, as the Huskies cruised to their 12th win.
Cash registered 18 points and 15 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the
season while Moore narrowly missed one of her own, posting nine rebounds to go
along with her 21 points. Senior Sue Bird (Syosset, NY) had 12 points and eight
assists while sophomore Diana Taurasi (Chino, CA) and redshirt freshman Ashley
Battle (Pittsburgh, PA) rounded out the Husky double-digit scorers with 10
points apiece.
For the Matadors, Cardenas finished with 19 points and impressed the Husky
crowd with five three-pointers. Jenny Shetters added 16 points for Northridge,
who remained winless this season with a 0-8 record.
UConn hits the road for only the second time this season when it travels to
Norfolk, VA, to face No. 23 Old Dominion this Saturday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
at the ODU Fieldhouse. |
