No. 1 UConn Dominates Pittsburgh, 112-43, for its Second BIG EAST Victory of the
Season

STORRS, CT (Jan. 2, 2002) -- Behind seven players in double figures, the No.
1 University of Connecticut women’s basketball team raced to a 112-43 victory
over Pittsburgh in its second BIG EAST contest of the season. The 69-point
margin of victory was the largest of the season for UConn, who improves to 15-0
overall, 2-0 in the BIG EAST with the win.
The Huskies opened the game with a 43-6 run en route to the 56-13 advantage
at halftime. Senior Swin Cash (McKeesport, PA) led UConn with 14 points and 10
rebounds in the first half.
The second half was all UConn as well, as the Huskies mounted a 12-0 run to
begin the half. UConn posted its largest lead of the game and the season with
the score, 112-40, with four seconds remaining before Pittsburgh’s Brooke
Stewart hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.
Cash paced all scorers with 19 points and 10 rebounds in only 21 minutes of
action. The double-double was the seventh of the season for Cash, who leads the
BIG EAST in double-doubles. Redshirt freshman Jessica Moore (Palmer, AK)
narrowly missed a double-double of her own with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Senior Asjha Jones (Piscataway, NJ) also posted 14 points while redshirt
freshman Ashley Battle (Pittsburgh, PA) registered a career-high 13 points.
Sophomores Diana Taurasi (Chino, CA) and Maria Conlon (Derby, CT) each added 12
points, and senior Tamika Williams (Dayton, OH) rounded out the double-digit
Husky scorers with 11 points.
For the Panthers, freshman Amy Kunich had 11 points on three three-pointers.
Haley Harguth added nine points.
Pittsburgh struggled to find its offense under the pressure of the Husky
defense, as the Panthers shot 23.1 percent from the field in the game.
Pittsburgh junior Mandy Wittenmyer, who averaged 14.8 points entering the
contest, was held to two points and two rebounds in 16 minutes.
Pittsburgh is 5-8, 0-2 in the BIG EAST this season.
UConn travels to Knoxville, TN, for its next contest. The showdown between
No. 1 UConn and No. 2 Tennessee is set for 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5. The game
will be nationally broadcast on CBS. |
