Huskies Storm Past Seton Hall, 92-40

STORRS, CT (Feb. 6, 2002) -- Senior Swin Cash (McKeesport, PA) posted her
11th double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead six
UConn players in double-figures as the No. 1 University of Connecticut women’s
basketball team stormed past Seton Hall, 92-40, in BIG EAST action Wednesday
night at Gampel Pavilion.
With the win, UConn head coach Geno Auriemma notches career victory No. 450
and his team improves to 25-0 overall, 11-0 in the conference. Seton Hall falls to 11-11 overall, 3-8 in the BIG EAST.
UConn opened the game with eight unanswered points en route to a 22-3 lead at
the 15:15 mark. By the time Cash recorded a layup at the 17:40 mark in the first
half, UConn’s five starters each had found her way into the scoring column.
The Huskies opened up a 55-24 halftime advantage due in large part to a
blistering 65.7 field goal percentage in the first stanza. UConn also posted 11
steals off 14 Pirate turnovers and outrebounded Seton Hall, 21-6.
Seniors Sue Bird (Syosset, NY) and Asjha Jones (Piscataway, NJ) led UConn
with 13 points apiece in the half. Cecilia Lindqvist had six points for Seton
Hall on two three-pointers in the final two minutes of the first half.
Lindqvist’s threes trimmed UConn’s lead to 31 points after the Huskies had
posted their largest lead of the half at 55-18 with 2:14 remaining.
UConn started strong in the second half, reeling off nine unanswered points,
including seven by Cash. Seton Hall finally got on the board with two free
throws by Naimah Smith at the 16:17 mark, but by then the game was out of reach
with the score, 64-26.
The Huskies eventually ran to a 54-point lead on three occasions in the
second half before the Pirates narrowed the final UConn margin of victory to 52
points.
For the game, UConn shot 57.1% from the floor and notched 16 steals. The
Huskies also outrebounded Seton Hall, 41-23.
Jones led all scorers with 17 points while Bird finished with 15 points and
seven assists. Sophomore Diana Taurasi (Chino, CA) recorded 12 points while
redshirt freshmen Jessica Moore (Palmer, AK), in her third career start, and
Ashley Battle (Pittsburgh, PA) each had 11.
Susan Murray paced Seton Hall with 12 points.
UConn finishes up its two-game homestand at Gampel Pavilion with a 2:00 p.m.
contest with No. 23 Virginia Tech on Sunday. The Huskies narrowly escaped with a
59-50 win over the Hokies in the season’s first game between the two schools
last Tuesday. |
