STORRS, CT (Sept. 1, 2002)-- Senior Kelly Cochrane (Scarsdale, NY) paced the
Huskies with two goals and two assists to lead the Connecticut field hockey team
to a 4-1 win over the University of Vermont in day two of the UConn Husky
Classic at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex. The Huskies earned their
first victory of the season and lifted their record to 1-1, while Vermont fell
to 0-2 on the year.
Vermont opened the scoring just five minutes into the game when the
Catamounts took advantage of a penalty corner and Kristen MacDonald scored off
feeds from Steph Shield and Shawn Carney at the 5:41 mark. The Huskies answered
immediately when a scramble in front of the Vermont goalie, Holly Colberg, led
to a penalty stroke for the Huskies and Cochrane converted on her first goal of
the afternoon (6:11) to tie the game. UConn sophomore Lauren Henderson (Avondale
Harare, Zimbabwe) added the game-winner just before the half (32:25) on a set
corner play with assists by Cochrane and junior Lauren Thibodeau (Southbury,
CT).
The Huskies added two more insurance goals in the second period when Cochrane
scored off her second penalty stroke of the game at 53:45 and Henderson finished
the scoring when she took a flat pass from Cochrane at 60:17 and beat the goalie
from eight yards out.
The Huskies dominated the game outshooting Vermont, 20-3, and had 12 penalty
corners to Vermont’s three. UConn junior goalie Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY)
made just two saves on the day, while Colberg stopped 10 Husky shots.
The Huskies return to action on Friday, Sept. 6, when they host Penn State at
7 p.m. under the lights of the George J. Sherman-Family Sports Complex.
In the final game of the UConn Husky Classic, Hoftra topped Providence on a
first period goal by Tricia-Ann Greaves to finish 2-0 on the weekend and earn
the 2002 UConn Husky Classic Championship title.
The All-Tournament team consisted of Tricia-Ann Greaves (Hofstra) , Jennifer
Chin (Providence), Kelly Cochrane (Connecticut) and Molly Sheehan (Vermont).
