CAMBRIDGE, MA (Sept. 10, 2002)-- Despite dominating the play, the University
of Connecticut field hockey team suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of New
Hamphire on Tuesday evening falling to 1-3 on the season.
The game was played at Harvard University due to field construction at New
Hampshire. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 3-2 on the season.
Sophomore Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) led the Husky attack
in the first half recording four shots, and helped the Huskies control the game
during much of the period. UConn had trouble finding the net, however, which led
to scoreless halftime.
The Wildcats came out strong in the second half and notched the first tally
of the game at 42:22 when Kristen Weldon weaved through the Husky defense for an
unassisted goal. New Hampshire’s Jen Stamp scored the gamewinner 22 minutes
later (64:20) off a feed from Marcie Boyer.
Just three minutes later the Huskies finally got on the board when freshman
Becky Helwig (Madison, NJ) scored her first collegiate goal off a cross from
senior Kelly Cochrane (Scarsdale, NY) at 67:25. The Huskies had possession and a
chance to tie with one minute left on the clock, however, a foul just outside
the circle gave New Hampshire the ball and the victory.
UConn junior goalie Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) made one save on the night
for the Huskies, while her New Hampshire counterpart, Christine Buckley stopped
seven Connecticut shots on goal.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday and Sunday, September 14-15, when
they compete in the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge in Ann Arbor, MI. UConn will face
Iowa at 3:30 on Saturday and plays Michigan at 1:00 on Sunday.
