Ann Arbor, MI (Sept. 15, 2002)-- Michigan's Molly Powers scored the
gamewinner just seven minutes into sudden death overtime to lead the University
of Michigan field hockey team to a 2-1 overtime victory over the University of
Connecticut in the final day of play of the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge in Ann
Arbor, MI. UConn falls to 1-5 overall, while Michigan improves to 5-1 on the
season.
The Huskies were outshot 25-4 on the day, however, managed to get on the
board first when sophomore Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) scored
her team-leading fifth goal of the season late in the second half after beating
the Michigan goalie, Molly Maloney, at the top of the circle to gain the open
net.
UConn held the lead for just eight minutes before Michigan answered with a
goal by Stephanie Johnson off a set corner play. UConn goalie Maureen Butler
(Red Hook, NY) made several key stops in the closing minutes to force the
overtime period.
UConn was able to get one shot off in the overtime, however, Powers ended the
game for Michigan at 77:32 when she cut around the UConn defense for the reverse
shot gamewinner.
Butler finished the day with 13 saves in net for the Huskies, while Maloney
stopped just one UConn shot.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 18, when they face Harvard
at 7 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
