Storrs, CT (Oct. 4, 2002)-- Sophomore Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare,
Zimbabwe) scored a career-high five goals to lead the University of Connecticut
field hockey team to a 6-0 shutout over intrastate rival Quinnipiac on Friday
night at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex in Storrs. The win is
UConn’s sixth in a row and lifts its record to 7-5 overall, while Quinnipiac
falls to 7-6 on the season.
Senior Kelly Cochrane (Scarsdale, NY) assisted on all five of Henderson’s
goals setting a new school record for most assists in a single game, while
Henderson’s five goals tied a UConn record for most goals in a game.
Henderson scored all three goals in the first half off penalty corners. UConn
used a set play in each where Henderson took a feed from Cochrane who received
the ball from sophomore Lauren Christie (Raby, Australia).
Henderson opened the second stanza with a goal off a cross from Cochrane at
44:11, before the same trio from the first half combined for another Henderson
penalty corner goal at 50:20. UConn’s final tally came from junior Kelly Stolle
(Warren, CT) at the 57:46 mark.
The Huskies outshot the Bobcats, 13-1, with Quinnipiac’s only shot coming
from senior Courtney Ryan (New Hope, PA). UConn goalies junior Maureen Butler
(Red Hook, NY) and senior Pam Berchtold (Egg Harbor City, NJ) combined for the
shutout without making a save, while Erin McKay (Norwood, MA) had six saves for
the Bobcats.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 9, when they face BIG EAST
foe Boston College at 7 p.m. in Chestnut Hill, MA.
