Huskies Edged by Princeton in Double Overtime

BOXSCORE

Storrs, CT (Oct. 12, 2002)-- Ilvy Friebe of Princeton University scored the game-winner in double overtime to lift the Tigers past the University of Connecticut field hockey team, 4-3, on Saturday at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs, CT. The loss breaks a string of seven straight wins for UConn who falls to 8-6 overall while Princeton moves to 5-4 on the season.

Princeton scored the only goal of the first period off a penalty corner and took a 3-1 lead in the second half before UConn junior Kelly Stolle (Warren, CT) made it a one goal game when she knocked in a rebound off the goalie pads of Princeton keeper Kelly Baril (60:05). UConn senior Kelly Cochrane (Scarsdale, NY) knotted the game at three apiece on a penalty stroke at 64:07 to force the overtime.

UConn had three shots in the first overtime, with its best scoring chance coming off the stick of junior Mary Jo Malone (Water Mill, NY) whose shot hit the post. The Tigers answered with two shots of their own, one of which UConn sophomore Lauren Christie (Raby, Australia) stopped just before the goal line for a defensive save which kept the Huskies alive and forced a second overtime period.

Friebe ended the game at 96:40 on a breakaway when she slipped a seven-yard shot past UConn junior goalie Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY).

UConn was outshot 27-15 on the afternoon and the Tigers held a 17-5 edge in penalty corners. Butler made 14 saves on the day, while Baril stopped five UConn shots in net for the Tigers.

The Huskies return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 16, when they host Northeastern at 7 p.m. at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
