Huskies Win Intrastate Clash Over Fairfield

BOXSCORE

FAIRFIELD, CT (Oct. 30, 2002)-- Sophomore Jennifer Lozito (Fairfield, NJ) of the University of Connecticut field hockey team scored the game-winning tally in the second overtime period to lead UConn to a 3-2 double overtime win over Fairfield on Wednesday afternoon at University Field. With the win, the Huskies lift their record to 11-7 overall, while the Stags fall to 7-10.

The Huskies got on the board first with a one-touch goal by sophomore Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) at the 20:26 mark off a crisp pass from senior Kelly Cochrane (Scarsdale, NY). Fairfield answered immediately when Dani Brown scored at 23:31 to knot the game at the intermission.

Henderson and Cochrane connected again as Henderson put the Huskies up one goal at the 54:29 mark, however, with just three minutes left in regulation Andrea Caputa of Fairfield found the back of the net to force the overtime.

Both teams played to a scoreless first overtime period before Lozito’s heroics at 88:55 ended the game.

Connecticut outshot Fairfield, 26-8, on the afternoon and held a 11-5 advantage in penalty corners. Junior Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) made four saves for the win, including one in the final overtime, while Fairfield goalie Lauren Thomas stopped 22 UConn shots.

The Huskies return to action on Saturday, Nov. 2, when they face BIG EAST foe Providence at 1 p.m. in Rhode Island. With a win on Saturday, the Huskies, who already own the top seed in the BIG EAST Tournament and at least a share of the regular season title, could secure sole possession of its sixth BIG EAST regular season title with a perfect 5-0 league record.
