PROVIDENCE, RI (Nov. 1, 2002)-- The University of Connecticut field hockey
team earned a 2-0 shutout over Providence College on Saturday afternoon to
clinch its sixth BIG EAST regular season title with a perfect 5-0 record in BIG
EAST play. The Huskies are the top seed in the BIG EAST Tournament with a 12-7
overall record, while Providence falls to 8-11 and 1-4 in league play.
Junior Mary Jo Malone (Water Mill, NY) scored the game-winning goal off a
feed from Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) just under two minutes
into the contest.
The goal stood through the halftime until senior Kelly Cochrane (Scarsdale,
NY) tallied an insurance goal at the 55 minute mark after a scramble in front of
the Providence net.
Connecticut outshot Providence, 14-9, on the afternoon. Junior Maureen Butler
(Red Hook, NY) made two saves on the day for the Huskies, while Friars goalie
Meaghan Moran stopped six UConn shots.
The Huskies return to action Tuesday, Nov. 5, for its final regular season
game versus 7th-ranked Northeastern at the George J. Sherman Family Sports
Complex in Storrs.
UConn will begin postseason play as the top seed in the BIG EAST Tournament
on Friday, Nov. 8, when they face the No. 4 seed Syracuse at 5 p.m. in Syracuse,
NY. Villanova is the No. 2 seed and will play No. 3 Boston College in the other
semifinal game at 7 p.m. The Championship game will be played on Sunday, Nov.
