BOXSCORE
CAMBRIDGE, MA (Nov. 16, 2002)-- Sarah Broderick broke open a scoreless game
with her game-winning goal at 50:03 to lift Northeastern to a 1-0 win over the
University of Connecticut (15-8) in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Division I
field hockey tournament, hosted by Harvard.
Northeastern (18-4) advances to meet third-seed Michigan State in the second
round of the tournament. The winner of that game will advance to the NCAA Final
Four, to be held at the University of Louisville on Nov. 22-24.
Connecticut outshot Northeastern, 8-0 in the first half with UConn’s best
scoring chance of the day coming from a hard shot by junior Mary Jo Malone
(Water Mill, NY) just seven minutes into the game, but NU netminder Emily Roy
posted three saves to keep the game scoreless into the half.
The two teams battled back and forth for most of the second half before
Broderick put Northeastern on the board and held on for the win.
Roy finished with three saves on the day, while UConn junior Maureen Butler
(Red Hook, NY) registered two saves in goal.
Connecticut held a 10-6 edge in shots, and both teams recorded seven corners
apiece.
The Huskies, who opened the year at 1-5, finished the season with a 15-8
overall record and were the 2002 BIG EAST regular season and tournament
champions.
