STORRS, CT (Nov. 18, 2002)-- Four student-athletes from the University of
Connecticut field hockey team were named to the 2002 STX/NFHCA Division I All-Mideast
Region team on Monday, Nov. 18. Senior midfielder Kelly Cochrane (Scarsdale,
NY), sophomore back Lauren Christie (Raby, Australia) and sophomore forward
Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) all earned First Team honors, while
junior forward Mary Jo Malone (Water Mill, NY) was named to the All-Region
Second Team.
UConn was led in scoring by Henderson, the 2002 BIG EAST Tournament MVP, who
had a career-high 23 goals and four assists for 50 points. Cochrane, who was
second on the team and the league, is atop the national statistics for assists
with 21 on the season along with eight goals for 37 points. Both were unanimous
2002 First Team All-BIG EAST performers.
The defense was anchored by Christie, the 2002 BIG EAST Defensive Player of
the Year, who chipped in with two goals and seven assists (15 points) on the
season while helping to hold opponents to only 8.5 shots per game.
Malone was third on the team in scoring with 10 goals and three assists for
23 points and was named an All-BIG EAST Second Team performer.
The Huskies completed their season at 15-8 overall and were the BIG EAST
Regular Season and Tournament champions.
