Huskies Sweep BIG EAST Weekly Awards

Providence, RI (Nov. 5) -- Sophomore Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) and junior Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) were named the BIG EAST Field Hockey Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, by the league office on Monday.

Henderson helped Connecticut to a 2-0 record for the week of Oct. 28, and clinch the BIG EAST regular season title. In UConn's 2-0 win over BIG EAST foe Providence, the forward set up the game-winning goal with an assist. The victory gave UConn its sixth BIG EAST regular season crown with a perfect 5-0 league record. In a 3-2 overtime win over intrastate rival Fairfield, Henderson scored two goals to give her a team and league-leading 20 goals on the year.

Defensively, Butler anchored the Connecticut defense in the net and recorded her third shutout in five BIG EAST contests with a 2-0 win over the Friars. The shutout was her sixth overall. Against Fairfield, Butler turned away four shots in a 3-2 overtime victory. For the season, the junior boasts a 1.44 goals against average.

The Huskies finish their regular season schedule today, Nov. 5, when UConn hosts 7th-ranked Northeastern at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex at 3 p.m.

UConn will begin postseason play as the top seed in the BIG EAST Tournament on Friday, Nov. 8, when they face the No. 4 seed Syracuse at 5 p.m. in Syracuse, NY.
