Huskies Top 7th-Ranked Northeastern in OT

BOXSCORE

Storrs, CT (Nov. 5, 2002)--Junior Mary Jo Malone (Water Mill, NY) scored the game-winning goal off an assist from senior Kelly Cochrane (Scarsdale, NY) to propel the University of Connecticut field hockey team to a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 7 nationally-ranked Northeastern University at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs. With the win, Connecticut finishes the regular season with a record of 13-7, while Northeastern falls to 15-4.

Northeastern sophomore Mari Creatini scored the game’s first goal off an assist from sophomore Liane Dixon and the score at halftime favored Northeastern 1-0.

However, Connecticut came out aggressively in the second half, out shooting Notheastern 10-0 in the stanza. Sophomore Lauren Christie (Raby, Australia) scored the tying goal at 48:41 off a deflection after Northeastern goalkeeper Emily Roy made the initial save. Christie’s score was the only goal UConn could manage in regulation forcing the overtime.

Malone’s game-winner came at the 80:29 mark. Both Malone and Cochrane broke ahead of all but one Northeastern defender and exchanged passes until Malone punched it in from point blank range.

Connecticut outshot Northeastern, 12-7, on the afternoon. Junior Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) made four saves all in the first half, while Roy stopped five UConn shots.
