Storrs, CT (Nov. 5, 2002)--Junior Mary Jo Malone (Water Mill, NY) scored the
game-winning goal off an assist from senior Kelly Cochrane (Scarsdale, NY) to
propel the University of Connecticut field hockey team to a 2-1 overtime victory
over No. 7 nationally-ranked Northeastern University at the George J. Sherman
Family Sports Complex in Storrs. With the win, Connecticut finishes the regular
season with a record of 13-7, while Northeastern falls to 15-4.
Northeastern sophomore Mari Creatini scored the game’s first goal off an
assist from sophomore Liane Dixon and the score at halftime favored Northeastern
1-0.
However, Connecticut came out aggressively in the second half, out shooting
Notheastern 10-0 in the stanza. Sophomore Lauren Christie (Raby, Australia)
scored the tying goal at 48:41 off a deflection after Northeastern goalkeeper
Emily Roy made the initial save. Christie’s score was the only goal UConn could
manage in regulation forcing the overtime.
Malone’s game-winner came at the 80:29 mark. Both Malone and Cochrane broke
ahead of all but one Northeastern defender and exchanged passes until Malone
punched it in from point blank range.
Connecticut outshot Northeastern, 12-7, on the afternoon. Junior Maureen
Butler (Red Hook, NY) made four saves all in the first half, while Roy stopped
five UConn shots.
UConn will begin postseason play as the top seed in the BIG EAST Tournament
on Friday, Nov. 8, when they face the No. 4 seed Syracuse at 5 p.m. in Syracuse,
NY. Villanova is the No. 2 seed and will play No. 3 Boston College in the other
semifinal game at 7 p.m. The Championship game will be played on Sunday, Nov.
