SAAC Collects Over 700 Pounds Of Food - Thank You Basketball Fans!

STORRS, Conn. (November 14, 2007) --- The University of Connecticut Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) held food drives at both the UConn men’s basketball game versus Buffalo on November 8 and women’s basketball game on November 11 against Stony Brook.

Roughly 40 student-athletes from baseball, softball, lacrosse, rowing, women’s swimming, men’s ice hockey and men’s and women’s track and field, volunteered their time to collect non-perishable food items from the time the doors opened until midway through the first half. Between the two games, over 700 pounds of food was collected.

SAAC members from the lacrosse and rowing team delivered the food to the Covenant Soup Kitchen, in Willimantic, Conn. The Covenant Soup Kitchen serves breakfast and a hot lunch every day and dinner on Fridays. They also serve as an emergency food pantry, which is where the majority of the food SAAC donates will go. The Food Pantry responds to requests for emergency groceries on a once per month, per family basis.

SAAC has been a major contributor to the Covenant Soup Kitchen and their Emergency Food Pantry for over five years. SAAC appreciates everyone’s efforts in making this drive a success!

SAAC will next host toy drives at the UConn vs. Holy Cross men’s ice hockey game November 30 at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum at 7:05, at the UConn vs. Virginia women’s basketball game December 5 at the Hartford Civic Center at 7:00 and at the UConn vs. Northeastern men’s basketball game December 6 at Gampel Pavilion at 7:30. All events will be collecting unwrapped children’s toys benefiting the Cornerstone Foundation in Rockville, Conn.
