UConn SAAC And Honors Council Team Up For "Swim With Mike"

STORRS, Conn. (April 11, 2008) --- The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the UConn Honors Council will be hosting a fundraising event for Joe Zinski, a current junior at the University of Connecticut, on Sunday, April 13. The event will take place at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Zinski, an honors student, suffered a diving accident after his first year at UConn causing him to become a quadriplegic. He receives a scholarship to attend UConn from an organization dedicated to providing financial assistance to athletes who have suffered life altering injuries called "Swim With Mike".

“Swim with Mike” is named after Mike Nyeholt, a three-time All-American swimmer at USC who suffered a paralyzing motorcycle accident in 1981. The program began as a one-time fundraising event and since then has evolved into an annual swim-a-thon for the Physically Challenged Athlete's Scholarship Fund, which offers full-tuition and living-expense scholarships for athletes who had an illness or accident that left them disabled.

UConn’s event will mark the first “Swim With Mike” event that will be held on the East Coast. In its 28th year of existence, “Swim With Mike” is an event that is run on the campuses of USC and the University of Hawaii each year. A total of $7.3 million has been raised since these events started.

The event at UConn will offer free food and drink.  In addition, teams will be able to sign up for a water volleyball tournament, play sharks and minnows, and swim laps. Admission is five dollars.
