UConn SAAC Presents Check For $30,000 To Red Cross For Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Connecticut Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) presented a check for $30,000 to the American Red Cross at Friday night's UConn vs. Syracuse football game at Rentschler Field.

The money was collected from fans that attended the Sept. 10 UConn vs. Liberty football game.

Taking part in the presentation (photo to left) was: Associate Director of Athletics and SAAC advisor Bill Shults, SAAC service committee chair Leah Williams of the women's track and field team, Director of Athletics Jeff Hathaway, Red Cross Charter Oak Chapter of Connecticut CEO Debra Pasquale, Red Cross Charter Oak Chapter of Connecticut Chair Carl Johnson, SAAC president Joel Legare of the men's track and field team and SAAC vice president Janet Williams of the women's lacrosse team.

“The UConn Division of Athletics would like to thank everyone that participated in the collection for the Hurricane Relief Fund,” said UConn Director of Athletics Jeff Hathaway. “Our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee did a phenomenal job in organizing and staffing the event. Our loyal UConn fans were extremely generous and we thank them. The collection was a great group effort and because of everyone’s hard work, we were able to help our fellow citizens in the Gulf region.”

The collection was part of a broad-based effort by the entire University of Connecticut community to aid those who were affected by Hurricane Katrina.

UConn has welcomed nearly 50 students from Connecticut who attend New Orleans-area universities affected by Hurricane Katrina. The students are attending classes at Storrs, Stamford, Waterbury, and the UConn School of Law.
