STORRS, Conn. (March 5, 2008) –
The University of Connecticut
has been named to the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS)
“Outreach and Community Service Honor Roll” for the second consecutive year.
UConn was just one of 49 schools honored with
this designation. The NCAS collects dates on community outreach by athletic
departments around the country and the top 15-20 percent are honored.
The National Consortium for Academics and Sports
(NCAS), housed at the University of Central Florida, is an organization of
colleges, universities and individuals. The mission of the NCAS is to create
a better society by focusing on educational attainment and using the power
and appeal of sport to positively affect social change.
“The University of Connecticut is very honored to
again be named to the NCAS Outreach and Community Service Honor Roll,” says
UConn Director of Athletics Jeffrey Hathaway. “Our student-athletes serve as
wonderful role models in the community and around the state of Connecticut
and we are very proud of the various activities that they perform.
“Along with academic achievement and athletic
competition, we consider community outreach to be a vital part of the
student-athlete experience at UConn. I am particularly grateful to the
various members of the Student-Athletes Advisory Committee. So many of our
student-athletes get involved in community service through SAAC and they are
great ambassadors for our entire University.”
