UConn Rallies For Come-From-Behind Victory to Start Season

MISSISSIPPI STATE, MS (February 21) –  The University of Connecticut baseball team rallied for seven runs in the final two innings to earn a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over Birmingham-Southern in its season opener at the National Bank of Commerce Classic hosted by Mississippi State University on Friday afternoon.

The Huskies found themselves down, 6-0, after seven innings as the Panthers got on the board in the first inning as their first batter,  Adam Pease doubled and later scored on a two-run single by Connor Robertson.  Birmingham scored two more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.  Michael Cline hit a two-run homerun in the fifth and Scott Billak stole home in the sixth. 

UConn rallied in the seventh inning, started off by a Dan Trubia (Tolland, CT) homerun.  The Huskies then had four more hits and capitalized on a Birmingham error to bring them within one run.  Mike Leonard (Vernon, CT) contributed a single in the rally, with extends his hitting streak to 21 games.

Connecticut finished with two runs at the top in the final inning off three hits and two errors.  The Huskies allowed no hits in the bottom of the ninth to hold on for the 7-6 win.

The Huskies return to action on Saturday, February 22 when they face Birmingham-Southern once again at 11 a.m.
