MOBILE, AL (March 7) – The University of Connecticut baseball team
found themselves down, 6-3 after six innings, but used a 12-run
seventh to pull past South Alabama, 16-11, on Friday evening at Stanky
Field. The Huskies improve to 2-3 on the season at the Jaguars fall to
6-7.
Josh Touchstone homered to right field for the Jaguars first hit of
the game in the second inning. He started the rally that scored four
over six hits to pull ahead of the Huskies.
UConn found runs in both the fourth and fifth innings that would
bring them within one. Mike McDonough (Abington, MA) had his first of
three hits for the Huskies in the fourth to send in Pete Soteropoulos
(Peabody, MA), who got on base on an error by the Jaguars’
centerfielder. The Huskies would score two more in the fifth.
South Alabama extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth, an
inning that started off with a Brett parker homerun.
The Huskies rallied big in the top of the seventh, scoring 12 runs
on nine hits and capitalizing on two South Alabama errors.
Soteropoulos started the inning with a single up the middle and scored
on another single by McDonough. UConn went around the order twice
before the Jaguars were able to put a halt to the rally. South Alabama
scored one more in the bottom of the inning and four more in the
bottom of the ninth, but the 12-run inning proved too much for them to
recover from.
UConn’s Bob Barton (Carlisle, MA) recorded the win and Adam Wood
suffered the loss. McDonough led the Huskies’ offense, going
three-for-four with six RBI and two walks. Russ D’Argento (Marlboro,
MA) and Mike Mocerino (Northboro, MA) also contributed three hits in
the win.
Connecticut committed no errors in the game, as the Jaguars had
six.
The Huskies return to action on March 8 at 2:00 pm when they take
on South Alabama in Mobile for the second of a three-game series with
the Jaguars.
