Huskies Drop Series With South Alabama, 2-1

MOBILE, AL (March 9) – The University of Connecticut baseball team dropped the second in a row to South Alabama to drop a three-game series 2-1 with a 10-5 loss on Sunday at Stanky Field. The Huskies fall to 2-5 as the Jaguars improve to 8-7.

Ryan Mulhern hit a home run in the bottom of the second inning for his second in two days against the Huskies. South Alabama came out the next inning with six runs to pull in front of the Huskies early in the game. The inning started with a walk, as Brett Parker got on base and later scored on a single to right field by Kevin Sytko. T.J. Touchstone, Mulhern, Josh Touchstone and Tim Land also added hits in the inning.

The Jaguars produced three more in the bottom of the fourth while holding the Huskies scoreless. Sytko added a three-run homerun to give South Alabama a commanding 9-0 lead.

UConn had a rally late in the game, scoring five runs in the eighth but coming up short of a comeback. Brett Burnham (South Windsor, CT) started the inning off with a a single to center field, and was followed by singles from Tony Mallozzi (Westboro, MA), Peter Soteropoulos (Peabody, MA), Mike Leonard (Vernon, CT) and Bryan Maler (Ansonia, CT). Dan Trubia (Tolland, CT) snuck in a double to score Soteropoulos.

UConn’s Soteropoulos (0-1) suffered the loss for the Huskies, allowing all ten of South Alabama’s runs in the first four innings. Caleb Crosby (2-1) earned the win allowing four UConn runs and striking out four.

The Huskies return to action on March 12 at 1:00 pm when they take on Sacred Heart in Bridgeport, CT.
