Burnham Helps Huskies Avoid Sweep at New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, LA (March 17) – Senior Brett Burnham went 3-for-4 with six RBIs to lead the University of Connecticut baseball team to a 13-6 win over New Orleans to avoid a series sweep. The win moves the Huskies to 3-7, while the Privateers fall to 13-9.

New Orleans jumped out early for the first time in the series with four runs in the bottom of the first. UConn would answer right back in the top of the second with six runs. Freshman Bryan Maler (Ansonia, CT) led off the inning with a homerun. The scoring continued with a two run double by Burnham, a two run single by Peter Soteropoulos (Peabody, MA) and an RBI double by Mike McDonough (Abington, MA).

The Privateers would pull to within one run in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Gabe Trevizo. The Huskies added two runs to their lead in the top of sixth on an RBI triple by Russ D’Argento (Marlboro, MA) and on Burnham’s second RBI double.

New Orleans would put one more run on the board in the bottom of the seventh on a UConn error. The Huskies would put the Privateers away though plating five runs in the top of the ninth capped off by a three run homerun by Burnham.

Soteropoulos gets the win for the Huskies allowing four hits and five runs (three earned) in five innings of work. Tim Norton (Pascoag, RI) and Mike James (Roswell, GA) pitched well in relief allowing only one run in four innings of work. The losing pitcher for New Orleans was Chris Bourgeois.

The Huskies continue their road trip with a single game tomorrow, March 18, against Southeastern Louisiana at 7:30 pm.
