Huskies Eleven Run Ninth Inning Leads to Victory

HAMDEN, CT (March 27) – An eleven run ninth inning propelled the University of Connecticut baseball team to a come from behind 15-9 victory over instate rival Quinnipiac at Bobcat Field. The win for the Huskies moves them to 10-8 on the season, while the Bobcats fall to 2-10.

UConn scored in the top of the first on an RBI single by Tim Dempsey to score Brett Burnham. Quinnipiac would tie it at 1-1 in the bottom of the second with an RBI single by Ricky Coppola. The Huskies would move back in front in the top of the third on an RBI single by Mike Leonard, which scored Peter Soteropoulos.

Quinnipiac would take their first lead of the game with a huge four run bottom of the third. All four of the Bobcats runs in the inning were unearned due to three UConn errors. The Huskies would come back with two runs in the top of the fourth to cut it to 5-4. UConn’s runs came off RBI singles from Soteropoulos and Leonard to score Russ D’Argento and Burnham.

The Bobcats would score a run in the bottom of the fourth and three runs in the bottom of the sixth, while holding the Huskies scoreless to the ninth. Quinnipiac’s run in the fourth came off another UConn error, while the three runs in the sixth came off an RBI double by Kevin McIlvane and a two run home run by Albert Marano.

The Huskies trailing 9-4 heading to the ninth inning sparked a late rally. The rally started with Burnham getting hit by a pitch and then stole second. Soteropoulos and Leonard followed with walks to load the bases. Dempsey then reached on an error, which scored Burnham and left the bases loaded. Jeremy Balisciano then was hit by a pitch for an RBI as Soteropoulos scored to make it 9-6. Bryan Maler followed with a two run double to pull the Huskies within one and leave runners on second and third. With two outs Dan Trubia hit a two run single to right to give UConn the lead at 10-9. The Huskies were not done as D’Argento hit an RBI double to score Trubia. Burnham then singled to right to score D’Argento. UConn loaded the bases again on a Soteropoulos single and Leonard being hit by a pitch. Dempsey followed with a base clearing double to give the Huskies an 11 run inning. James would strike out the side in the bottom of the ninth for the final score of 15-9.

Bob Barton pitched 2.2 scoreless innings to get the win for the Huskies, while Ari Kafka allowed seven runs, four earned in 0.2 of an inning to get the loss.

The Huskies return home on Saturday, March 29, to play host to BIG EAST rival Villanova in a double header at J.O. Christian Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12 Noon.
