JAMAICA, NY (April 4) – The University of Connecticut baseball team split a hard fought doubleheader against St. John’s on Friday at the Ballpark at St. John’s in Jamaica, N.Y. The opener saw the Huskies’ 11-game winning streak snapped in the Red Storm’s final at bat while UConn methodically scored in the night cap to gain the split. The Huskies now stand at 15-9 on the year and 6-1 in BIG EAST play while the Red Storm is 14-13 overall and 4-1 in conference games.

St. John’s plated a run in the first inning of the opener on a Jim Martin ground out to second base that scored Derek Sullivan. The game stayed 1-0 until the seventh and final inning as UConn’s Nick Tucci and Joe Reid of St. John’s worked their magic on the mound. UConn scored twice in the seventh to go up 2-1 when Mike McDonough ground a single through the left side of the Red Storm infield to plate a pair of runs. McDonough’s heroics were countered though as St. John’s scored three in the home half of the inning to win it. After Mike Rozema drove in the first run with a two-out double to left center, Tucci was lifted for reliever Mike James. Sullivan greeted James rudely though with a game-winning two-run homer to left field. The loss snapped UConn’s 11-game winning streak which was it’s longest of the BIG EAST era.

The Huskies scored single runs in the second, third, fifth, sixth and ninth innings of the nightcap to earn a 5-3 win. The Huskies took a 4-0 lead to the seventh inning stretch with starter Tim Norton in cruise control. A pinch hit three-run home run by Blake Hershelman made the game interesting as it cut the UConn lead to 4-3. This time though, James would get the job done, and pick up his seventh save of the year in the process, throwing two innings of shutout relief.

The Huskies will return to action on Sunday when they travel to face Seton Hall in a noon doubleheader.
