KINGSTON, RI (APRIL 10) - Mike Mocerino (Northboro, MA) hit two
home runs to lead the University of Connecticut to a 10-4 win over the
University of Rhode Island on Thursday, April 10, at Bill Beck Field.
The win moves the Huskies to 16-11 on the season, while the Rams fall
to 12-16.
The Huskies started the scoring in the top of the first on a solo
home run by Peter Soteropoulos (Peabody, MA). Rhode Island tied the
game in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Dan Batz.
UConn would take the lead for good adding two runs in the second
and three runs in the third. In the second UConn scored on a Mike
Leonard (Vernon, CT) solo shot and then on an unearned run scored by
Mocerino, who doubled in the inning. Mocerino continued his run
producing in the third with a three run home run that scored Mike
McDonough (Abington, MA) and Bryan Maler (Ansonia, CT).
The Huskies would increase their lead to 7-1 in the sixth on a Dan
Trubia (Tolland, CT) home run, but Rhode Island would come back with
two in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Justin Lamboy and
an RBI single by Dan Tucker.
Connecticut would add three insurance runs in the seventh on
Mocerino's second three run home run of the day. Rhode Island would
add one in the bottom of the inning on a Batz RBI single for the final
of 10-4.
The winning pitcher for the Huskies Shawn Hoggatt (Milford, CT) and
the losing pitcher for Rhode Island is Mike Lefort. UConn's starting
pitcher Ryan Christopher (Suffern, NY) pitched well going three
innings, while allowing one run on three hits.
The Huskies continue their road trip tomorrow at against West
Virginia. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
