STORRS, CT (April 24) - The University of Connecticut baseball team
scored 11 runs and pounded out 15 hits to defeat Quinnipiac 11-5, at
J.O. Christian Field on Thursday, afternoon. The win moves the Huskies
to 19-17 on the season, while the Bobcats fall to 11-19 overall.
Quinnipiac started the scoring in the top of the third, plating two
runs on RBI singles by Brien Magee and Kevin McIlvane. UConn would
answer in the bottom half of the inning and take the lead for good.
The Huskies scored five runs on a two run triple by Brett Burnham
(South Windsor, CT), RBI singles by Mike Leonard (Vernon, CT) and Mike
Mocerino (Northboro, MA) and a balk to score Mocerino.
UConn would add single runs in the fourth and sixth and four runs
in the fifth to take a commanding 11-2 lead. The run in the fourth
came on an RBI single by Tim Dempsey (Lexington, MA)) and in the sixth
on a sacrifice fly by Russ D’Argento (Marlboro, MA). The four in the
fifth came courtesy of RBI singles from Burnham and Bryan Maler and a
two run double by Leonard. Quinnipiac would add three more runs one in
the sixth on an RBI by Magee and two in the ninth on RBI singles by
Albert Marano and Greg Greiner for an 11-5 final.
The winning pitcher for Connecticut was Brendan McGinn, who picks
up his first collegiate win and the loser for Quinnipiac is Cameron
Ball.
The Huskies return to BIG EAST action on Saturday, when they travel
to play a double header against Notre Dame. First pitch on Saturday is
scheduled for Noon.
