NOTRE DAME, IN - (April 26) The University of Connecticut dropped
both games of a double header at Notre Dame 3-2 and 11-4, Saturday
afternoon at Eck Stadium. The Huskies fall to 19-19 on the season and
7-11 in the BIG EAST, while the Fighting Irish improve to 33-9 overall
and 12-2 in the conference.
Game one saw the Huskies jump out to an early 2-0 lead on single
runs in the third and fourth innings. In the third UConn scored on a
sacrifice fly by Dan Trubia (Tolland, CT) that brought home Mike
Leonard (Vernon, CT) and in the fourth the Huskies used a RBI single
from Leonard to score Brett Burnham (South Windsor, CT) for the early
advantage.
Notre Dame would come back though cutting the lead to one on a solo
home run by Matt Macri in the fifth. The Irish would go ahead for good
in the sixth on a RBI single by Matt Edwards and a RBI by Javi Sanchez
on a fielders choice play for the 3-2 final.
Nick Tucci (Medford, MA) gets the tough loss for the Huskies as he
pitched five innings and allowed three runs on five hits while
striking out five. Ryan Doherty picks up the win for Notre Dame and
J.P. Gagne gets his ninth save.
In game two Notre Dame took the early lead putting a run on the
board in the first on a sacrifice fly by Brennan Grogan. The Huskies
would tie the game up in the third on a Tony Mallozzi (Westboro, MA)
RBI single that brought home Trubia. The Fighting Irish would blow the
game open in the fourth scoring seven runs with only four of the runs
earned. Key hits in the inning were a RBI double by Macri and a two
run double by Edwards.
UConn would score two in the seventh on a RBI single by Peter
Soteropoulos (Peabody, MA) and a sacrifice fly Burnham to cut the lead
to 8-3. Notre Dame would get one run right back in the bottom of the
inning and two more in the eighth for an 11-3 advantage. The Huskies
would put one last run on the board in the top of the ninth thanks to
a RBI single by Soteropoulos.
John Axford was outstanding on the mound for Notre Dame picking up
his ninth victory going six innings and allowing one run on four hits
and striking out six. Tim Norton (Pascoag, RI) picks up the loss for
UConn.
The Huskies will finish the series with a final game tomorrow at
noon at Eck Stadium in Notre Dame, IN.
