TEMPE, AZ (February 29) - Senior Mike Mocerino (Northboro, MA) went 3-for-5 with a home run, a triple and four RBI, and junior Russ D’Argento (Marlboro, MA) led off with a long ball for UConn but No. 7 Arizona State completed a three game sweep of the Huskies with an 18-11 victory over the University of Connecticut baseball team on Sunday afternoon in Tempe, Ariz. The Sun Devils improve to 12-2 with the victory, while the Huskies fall to 0-3 on the young season.

UConn’s 11 runs scored on Sunday were the most ASU has given up all season.

The Huskies scored ten unanswered runs in the final three innings and recorded more hits (16) than the Sun Devils (15) on the afternoon.

After D’Argento’s leadoff homer over the centerfield fence, the Huskies would not score again until the seventh inning. ASU would post six-run innings in both the second and third innings and added a back to back three-run innings in the fourth and fifth. UConn starter Nick Tucci (Medford, MA) was roughed-up as he gave up 11 earned runs in 2.1 innings.

Brendan McGinn (Tolland, CT) and Josh MacDonald (Milford, CT) combined for 3.1 innings and gave up seven runs, but sophomore right hander Joe Smeraglino (Shelton, CT) made his 2004 debut in style, hurling 3.1 scoreless innings while giving up two hits and striking out five.

The bottom half of the UConn lineup was very effective as Mike Leonard (Vernon, CT) Marc Peluso (Pawcatuck, CT), Mocerino, Dave Tokarz (Seymour, CT) and Matt Untiet (Berlin, CT) went a combined 12-for-27, giving the Husky lineup some pop.

Peluso had a 2-for-4 afternoon on Sunday, and finished the series with five hits in nine at bats. Tokarz, a tri-captain, went 4-for-10 in the series and drove in three runs on the weekend.

The Huskies are back in action next week when they travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to compete in the Kennel Club Classic. The Huskies will play eight games from March 6-March 16. The Huskies open up the competition with a contest against Ohio State on Saturday March 6 at 3:30 p.m.
