JACKSONVILLE, FL (March 6) - Buckeye outfielder Mike Rabin hit a
two-out single up the middle in the bottom of the ninth inning and
Cody Caughenbaugh came around to score the game-winning run as Ohio
State defeated the University of Connecticut baseball team in dramatic
fashion by a score of 4-3 at the Kennel Club Classic in Jacksonville, Fla. The Huskies
slip to 0-4 on the season and OSU improves to 3-5.
UConn built a 3-1 lead through 6.5 innings but the Buckeyes
countered with one run in each of the last three innings to take home
the victory.
Senior tri-captain Mike James (Roswell, GA) made his second-career
start for the Huskies and hurled 6.2 innings, scattering seven hits
while allowing two runs and striking out four. James exited the game
with a 3-1 lead, and sophomore Tim Norton (Pascoag, RI) gave up one
unearned run in 0.2 innings of relief.
Trent Luyster pitched 8.1 innings for OSU, giving up three runs on
nine hits. Trey Fausnaugh threw the final 0.2 innings for the Buckeyes
for the win.
Jeff Hourigan (Beacon Falls, CT) drove in Russ D’Argento (Marlboro,
MA) in the first inning, giving the Huskies an early 1-0 lead.
D’Argento led the game off with a single to left. UConn extended its
lead to 2-0 in the third with some textbook small ball. D’Argento once
again led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a
bunt single by Tony Mallozzi (Westboro, MA). Bryan Maler (Ansonia, CT)
laid down a sac bunt that advanced D’Argento to third and Mallozzi to
second. Hourigan then notched his second RBI of the afternoon with a
sac bunt of his own, allowing D’Argento to score.
OSU would score one in the bottom of the fourth but the Huskies
answered with a run in the sixth after Mike Leonard (Vernon, CT)
scored on an error.
However, OSU would score one run in each of the last three innings
on its way to the win. All three runs scored with two outs.
Marc Peluso (Pawcatuck, CT) continued his hot hitting, going
3-for-4 on the afternoon, and Mallozzi and D’Argento each went 2-for-5
for UConn.
The Huskies are back in action on Sunday, March 7 when they take on
Illinois State at 2:30 p.m. in Jacksonville, Fla.
