Jacksonville, FL (March 13) – Jeff Hourigan pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out seven Bulldogs to lead the University of Connecticut baseball team past Butler, 10-0, in the Huskies final game at the Kennel Club Classic in Jacksonville, Fla. With the victory, the Huskies’ sixth straight, UConn improves to 6-5 on the season and wraps up its trip to Jacksonville with an impressive 6-2 record.

Josh MacDonald pitched two scoreless innings and gave up only one hit to finish off the Bulldogs.

Senior Marc Peluso continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-4 effort with two RBI and one run scored. Senior backstop Mike Leonard went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while classmate Mike Mocerino went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs.

The Huskies seized control of the game early with six runs in the second and third innings. Leonard led off the second inning with a single and Mike McDonough was hit by a pitch, setting up Marc Peluso’s sac bunt. Mocerino then laced a two run single into left and the Huskies never looked back.

Peluso double in the third scored both Leonard and McDonough and Peluso later came around to score on an error.

Husky right fielder Bryan Maler was integral in preserving the shutout when he robbed a Bulldog of a homerun when he reached over the rightfield fence and brought the ball back into play.

The Huskies are back in action on Wednesday, March 17 when they travel to Bridgeport, Conn. to take on Sacred Heart at 3:00 p.m.
