NEWARK, DE (March 21) – Junior Jeff Hourigan (Beacon Falls, CT)
threw six innings and helped himself to his second win of the season
with a 2-for-6, three RBI effort at the plate and Tim Dempsey
(Lexington, MA) went 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead the University of
Connecticut baseball team past Delaware, 13-10 on Sunday afternoon in
Newark, DE. With the victory, the Huskies’ eighth straight,
UConn improves to 8-5 on the season while Delaware slips to 13-6.
UConn enjoyed an offensive explosion this weekend, as the Huskies
went a combined 34-for-77 (.442) in the two-game series with the Blue
Hens.
Hourigan went six innings and gave up nine hits and seven runs;
boosting his record to 2-1 on the campaign. Brendan McGinn (Tolland,
CT) got two outs in the seventh, but gave up two runs and was relieved
by Joe Smeraglino (Shelton, CT). Smeraglino, UConn’s most reliable
reliever so far this season, tossed 2.1 innings, surrendering only one
hit and one run as UConn cruised to victory.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, UConn answered with four
runs in the third. Russ D’Argento (Marlboro, MA) continued his torrid
hitting with a 3-for-5 performance and led off the third with a
single. After Tony Mallozzi (Westboro, MA) bunted D’Argento over to
second, Hourigan helped his cause with a two run home run to give
UConn the lead. Mike Leonard (Vernon, CT) would score on a throwing
error, and Mike McDonough (Abington, MA) came around on Mike
Mocerino’s (Northboro, MA) single.
However, Delaware would plate five runs in the third to seize a 6-4
edge but UConn would rally for nine runs in the next three innings, to
take the lead for good.
UConn posted five runs and batted around in the decisive sixth
inning. Mallozzi led off with a triple and the Blue Hens elected to
intentionally walk Leonard. Marc Peluso (Pawcatuck, RI) made them pay
though with a two run double and Delaware walked two batters in a row
to force in the second run. Dempsey continued the onslaught with a two
run single through the right side and senior tri-captain Dave Tokarz
(Seymour, CT) hit a bunt single, scoring the fifth run.
Peluso went 3-for-5 with an RBI, and Mocerino went 1-for-2 with two
walks and two RBI.
The Huskies will play host to Massachusetts on Tuesday, March 23 at
3:00 p.m. in UConn’s first home game of the 2004 season.
