Villanova Takes Two From UConn

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The University of Connecticut baseball team
suffered a doubleheader sweep to the hands of Villanova on Saturday
afternoon by the scores of 3-1 and 8-0 in the BIG EAST Conference
opener for both teams. The Huskies fall to 9-8 on the season while
Villanova is 16-5.
In the opener, Villanova scored a pair of runs in the second inning
on as Brian Newbold had and RBI double and later scored on a fielder’s
choice. Villanova added a single run in the fourth on an RBI single by
Mark Cardillo. UConn scored its run in the fifth inning as Mark Peluso
scored an unearned run.
Jeff Hourigan (2-2) took the loss for UConn in six innings of
complete game work as he struck out three and allowed seven hits. Nick
Allen (2-0) pitched seven innings for the win as he scattered six
hits.
In the nightcap, Villanova broke open a 1-0 game with three runs in
the seventh inning and four more in the eighth. The seventh inning was
highlighted by a two-run single by Newbold while Danny Poydenis had a
two-run single in the eighth.
Mike James (2-2) took the loss for UConn in six and a third inning
of eight hit-four run work. Mike Loree (4-0) was the winner for
Villanova.
