PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. (March 28) — Villanova’s two runs in the
bottom of the seventh proved to be the difference as the Wildcats
completed a weekend sweep of the University of Connecticut baseball
team with a 4-2 victory on Sunday afternoon in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.
With the loss, UConn slips to 9-9 on the season, and 0-3 in BIG EAST
play while the Wildcats improve 17-5, 3-0.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Tony Mallozzi (Westboro,
MA) beat out an infield base hit with one out and came around to score
on Mike Leonard’s (Vernon, CT) double into the right center field gap.
However, the Wildcats answered with two runs in the home half of the
fourth to take the lead.
The Huskies would tie the score at two with one run in the sixth.
Senior tri-captain Dave Tokarz (Seymour, CT) laced a one out double to
right and then stole third base. Tokarz would score on a wild pitch.
Jim Gillan’s RBI double would score the game-winning run in the
seventh and Kris Molloy added an RBI double two batters later as ‘Nova
took the lead for good.
UConn starter Brendan McGinn (Tolland, CT) put together a quality
start for the second time this week. The Husky lefty went 6.1 innings
and gave up three runs on nine hits while striking out four and taking
the loss. Josh MacDonald (Milford, CT) pitched one third of an inning
and surrendered one run on two hits. Joe Smeraglino (Shelton, CT) kept
the Huskies in the game with 1.1 hitless innings while striking out
two.
Tim Dempsey (Lexington, MA) went 2-for-4 and Leonard went 1-for-4
with an RBI for Connecticut.
The Huskies are back in action on Tuesday, March 30 when they take
on Rhode Island. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. in Storrs.
