STORRS, Conn. (April 4) — Georgetown’s
Erick Chandler and Thomas Braun combined on a three-hit shutout as the
Hoyas defeated the University of Connecticut’s baseball team, 5-0, on
Sunday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field in Storrs. The Huskies dip to
12-11 overall and 2-4 in BIG EAST Conference games with the loss while
the Hoyas avoid a three-game sweep and improve to 18-16 overall, 4-5
in league play.
Dave Tokarz had two of UConn’s three hits (both doubles) while
Brian Maloney also picked up a single. The three hits were the squad’s
fewest since the season opener on Feb. 27 at Arizona State. The loss
overshadowed a solid outing from sophomore Brendan McGinn on the mound
for UConn as he allowed two runs in seven innings of work, yielding
eight hits and two walks while fanning four. Chandler threw seven
innings for the Hoyas, allowing two hits and two walks with a trio of
strikeouts. Braun threw two shutout innings in relief of Chandler and
allowed just Maloney’s single while fanning a pair of Huskies.
Georgetown took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning after
Andrew Cleary drew a leadoff walk. Ron Cano followed with a single,
one of his four hits on the day, and then Cleary stole third. Jim
Supple drove in the game’s opening tally with a single. The Hoyas got
a second run in the sixth inning when Cano doubled and scored on
another Supple single.
The Hoya lead grew to 3-0 in the top of the eighth when Cano
scored, unearned, on an error. The final two runs for Georgetown were
plated in the top of the ninth on a bases-loaded two-RBI double by
Cano that brought Parker Brooks and Billy Quinn home. Keith Potvin
came in from the Husky bullpen though and got Supple to line out to
Bryan Maler in left field to prevent any further damage.
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday when they travel to
Brookline, MA to face
Northeastern at 3:00.
