BROOKLINE, Mass. (April 6) — Freshman Rich Sirois threw six one-hit
shutout innings to lead the University of Connecticut baseball team to
a 6-1 win over Northeastern on Tuesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond
in Brookline, Mass. The win ups the UConn Huskies’ record to 13-11 on
the year while the Northeastern Huskies dip to 10-8 with the loss.
Sirois earned the first win of his young collegiate career in
impressive fashion as he struck out four and did not walk a batter
over his six innings of work. The southpaw retired the first 11
batters he faced and allowed only a double to Chris Emanuele with two
outs in the fourth inning. Keith Potvin, Ted Garry and Joe Smeraglino
each threw an inning of relief for UConn, combining to yield just one
run on three hits. UConn’s four pitchers did not issue any walks on
the day. Meanwhile, Northeastern used six different pitchers in the
game, including starter Jordan Thomson who was tagged with the loss.
UConn scored a single run in the top of the first inning when a
double down the left field line by Jeff Hourigan plated Marc Peluso.
That combination also produced UConn’s second run as a Hourigan single
to left center scored Peluso in the top of the sixth inning.
Northeastern scored its lone run in the home half of the seventh to
cut its deficit to 2-1. Emanuele tripled down the right field line and
scored a batter later when Tim Bush grounded out to short stop.
UConn broke the game open with four runs in the eighth inning to
account for the 6-1 final score. Hourigan’s third RBI hit of the day
drove in Tony Mallozzi with the rally’s first run. Matt Untiet’s
single to left field drove in both Peluso and Kyle Messineo and then
Dennis Donovan capped the rally with an RBI single that brought Dave
Tokarz homeward.

J.O. Christian Field in Storrs for a BIG EAST doubleheader at noon.
