STORRS, CT (April 14) -- The University of
Connecticut baseball team dropped Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader
3-0 to Massachusetts, but came back to capture Game 2 by a 9-2 score
at J.O. Christian Field in Storrs, Conn. With the split, the
Huskies move to 17-13 on the season, while the Minutemen now stand at
10-10.
UMass took the lead it would not relinquish in
the fourth inning of Game 1. Mike Athas started the inning out with a
single but Frank Cueri hit into a double play and seemingly ended the
threat. However, Matt Reynolds would draw a walk and would advance to
second on Curt Szado’s single. Adam Stojanowski singled up the
middle, driving in Reynolds.
The Minutemen would score two more in the top
half of the fifth inning as Athas came up big again, this time with a
two run single up the middle, adding some insurance for UMass.
The Huskies would threaten in the home half of
the sixth inning. Russ D’Argento (Marlboro, MA) led the inning off
with a double and Mike Leonard (Vernon, CT) drew a walk. But the
Huskies were unable to get a big hit and would not threaten again.
Jeff Hourigan (Beacon Falls, CT) went 2-for-3
with a double and D’Argento added a 2-for-3 effort with two doubles.
Josh MacDonald took the hard luck loss for the
Huskies, going six innings and giving up three runs on seven hits.
Devin Barnett went the full seven for UMass, earning the shutout
victory.
The Huskies seized control of Game 2 early,
scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning and they would
never look back. Hourigan drilled a bases loaded single into
right field, allowing the Huskies to take an early 1-0 lead.
Tokarz would follow that up with a two run single up the middle and
the Huskies were rolling.
UConn would not let up though as Bryan Maler
(Ansonia, CT) hit a single to right field plating two more runs.
Dennis Donovan (Center Moriches, NY) then hit a 3-2 fastball over the
shortstop's head allowing Maler to score the Huskies' sixth run of the
inning.
Freshman southpaw Rich Sirois (Ipswich, MA)
earned his second win as a Husky, hurling five innings and allowing
two runs on four hits. Ted Garry (Rochester, MN) threw a
scoreless sixth and Mike James (Roswell, GA) came in to close the door
with a scoreless seventh.
Leonard went 2-for-2 with three runs scored in
Game 2, and Hourigan collected two more hits while driving in two
runs. Tokarz, Maler and Donovan also drove in two runs in Game
2.
The Huskies are back in action on Thursday, April
15 when they take on intrastate foe Central Connecticut. Game
time is set for 3:00 p.m. in Storrs.
