Rutgers Completes Three Game Sweep of UConn

PISCATAWAY, NJ (April 18) -- The Huskies could not solve Rutgers
starter Aaron Kalb and the Scarlet Knights completed a three game
sweep of the Huskies with a 6-0 victory on Sunday afternoon in
Piscataway, N.J. With the loss, the Huskies slip to 17-17 on the
season and 5-8 in BIG EAST play. Rutgers wins its 13th consecutive
game, running its record to 20-13 on the year, 11-2 in the loop.
Rutgers took an early lead it would not relinquish in the first
inning. Graig Badger led off the first with a double down the right
field line and scored on Jeff Frazier’s sacrifice fly. Rich Canuso
then served a single into right and scored on Mike McDonough’s
(Abington, MA) error in right field, allowing Rutgers to seize a 2-0
advantage.
Rutgers would build on its lead in the fifth. Husky starter Brendan
McGinn (Tolland, CT) settled down for three innings and got Jason
Grover to fly out to center for the first out of the fifth inning.
However, McGinn walked Scarlet Knight leadoff man Graig Badger who
would steal second and advance to third on a balk. With the infield
drawn in, Jeff Grose hit a hard grounder to Husky second baseman Brian
Maloney (Hampton, NH). Maloney came home with the throw and nailed
Badger at the plate.
Rutgers would not let the fifth end though, as the Scarlet Knights
loaded the bases with two outs for DH Colin Gaynor. Gaynor would
single into right allowing two runs to score as Rutgers built the lead
to 4-0.
Canuso hit a homer over the right field fence and Rutgers added an
unearned run in the eighth for the 6-0 victory.
McGinn had another solid outing on Sunday, going seven innings and
allowing four earned runs while fanning three and walking one.
Russ D’Argento (Marlboro, MA) went 2-for-4 for the Huskies.
Kalb was outstanding for Rutgers, hurling eight innings giving up
no runs on five hits.
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday, April 20 when they welcome
Fairfield to Storrs for a pair of seven inning contests starting at
2:00 p.m. |
