Boxscores(.html) CHESTNUT HILL, MA (April 24) -- After taking
Game1 of Sunday’s doubleheader with Boston College by an 8-5 score,
the Huskies were one inning away from completing the sweep in Game 2.
However, the Eagles plated three runs in the bottom of the ninth and
won Game 2 by a 7-6 score in the 12th inning as the University of
Connecticut baseball team had to settle for a split with the Eagles in
Chestnut Hill, Mass. With the split, the Huskies move to 20-19 on the
season and 6-9 in BIG EAST play. The Eagles now stand at 16-20
overall, 5-6 in the loop.
The Game 1 victory was the Huskies first BIG EAST road win of the
season.
Senior tri-captain Mike James (Roswell, GA) earned the win in Game
1. James went the full seven innings and gave up five runs on nine hits
while walking six and garnering three punch outs. James’ record
improves to 5-3 on the year and his five wins are tops on the squad.
The Huskies dug themselves a hole in Game 1, falling behind 4-0
after three innings. However, UConn would post four runs in both the
fourth and fifth innings and James settled down, giving up only one
run over the final four frames.
UConn took advantage of a few Eagle mistakes in the fourth. BC
starter Chris Lambert hit two Huskies and surrendered two runs on
bases loaded walks. Matt Untiet (Berlin, CT) and Tim Dempsey
(Lexington, MA) drove in the other two runs with a pair of singles.
UConn would knock Lambert out in the fifth and would take the lead for
good on a Dave Tokarz (Seymour, CT) two run double down the left field
line. Jeff Hourigan (Beacon Falls, CT) and Untiet hit back to back
doubles off Lambert to lead off the inning.
Marc Peluso (Pawcatuck, RI) continued his hot hitting as he went
2-for-3 with two RBI in Game 1. Untiet went 2-for-4 with two RBI and
two runs scored.
Game 2 saw the Huskies take a commanding 5-0 lead in the second
inning after Tony Mallozzi (Westboro, MA) hit a two run double down
the leftfield line scoring Untiet and Mike Leonard (Vernon, CT) who
led off the inning with a double into the left center field gap. UConn
would then add three more unearned runs in the second frame. UConn
would build its lead to 6-0 after Tokarz led off the inning with a
double and later scored on an error.
However, BC would whittle away at the lead with two unearned runs
in the fifth and one run in the sixth on a Garrett Greer RBI double.
The Eagles would not threaten again until the ninth. BC infielder Ryan
Morgan reached third on an error by the Husky right fielder, and
scored on a ground out. Husky reliever Joe Smeraglino then struck out
Ryan Leahy, but Jason Delaney kept the inning alive after he reached
on an error by the UConn third baseman. The tying run came in on
another Husky error, as the Eagles tied the game up with three runs on
one hit and three errors.
Shawn McGill scored the wining run in the 12th on a single by Drew
Locke.
Brendan McGinn (Tolland, CT) gave UConn yet another quality start.
The sophomore went 6.1 innings, scattered seven hits and gave up only one earned run while striking out three.
Smeraglino went 4.2 innings and gave up three runs, all unearned, and
fanned three. Rich Sirois (Ipswich, MA) took the loss for the Huskies.
UConn is back in action on Monday, April 25 when they take on
Virginia Tech in a doubleheader. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. in
Blacksburg, Va. |
