STORRS, CT (May 11) — Ricky Coppola and Ryan Rizzo combined to go 8-for-10 with three RBI and three runs scored to lead Quinnipiac over the University of Connecticut baseball team by a 12-6 score. With the loss, the Huskies slip to 22-25 on the campaign and drop the season series to Quinnipiac, two games to one. The Bobcats improve to 23-18 overall as they prepare for NEC Tournament action in two weeks.

Brien Magee’s RBI groundout in the top of the third gave the Bobcats the lead for good. Quinnipiac would build its lead to 6-2 in the fifth after Bryan Sabatella led off the frame with a double into the right centerfield gap and was driven in by a Jason Binkoski single up the middle.

The Huskies would mount a charge in the home half of the fifth. Marc Peluso (Pawcatuck, RI) drilled a two run double into right field, scoring Dave Tokarz (Seymour, CT) and Tony Mallozzi (Westboro, MA). Peluso would later score on an RBI groundout by Tim Dempsey (Lexington, MA), drawing the Huskies within one run, 6-5.

However, the Bobcats answered with a run in the sixth and five more in the eighth and ninth. UConn would plate one in the last frame but it was two little to late.

Peluso went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Tokarz went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI and flew out to the right field wall in the ninth.

Chris Wakefield went three innings, gave up one earned run and took home the win. Pat Maguire (Chelmsford, MA) took the loss for Connecticut. Maguire went four innings and gave up four earned runs. His record slips to 1-1 on the year.

The Huskies are back in action on Wednesday, May 12 when travel to Pace for a 3:00 match up.
