UConn Ends Losing Skid With Tie at Pace

PLEASANTVILLE, NY (May 12) -- Senior first baseman Marc Peluso (Pawcatuck, CT) went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI, but the University of Connecticut baseball team could only manage a 5-5 tie in 11 innings against Pace University on Wednesday afternoon at Finnerty Field in Pleasantville, NY. With the tie, UConn’s record moves to 22-25-1 on the season, while Pace stands at 14-28-1.

The 5-5 deadlock puts a halt to UConn’s four game losing streak.

After a rough start, the Husky pitching staff settled down to shutout Pace over the final nine innings. Josh MacDonald (Milford, CT) got the start for the Huskies and went six innings giving up four earned runs on nine hits and struck out four. Jeff Hourigan (Beacon Falls, CT) relieved MacDonald and threw 1.2 innings of one hit, shutout ball. Mike James (Roswell, GA) pitched 2.1 innings without surrendering a run and gave up only one hit. Keith Potvin (Manchester, NH) pitched the eleventh, giving up one hit and striking out one.

Peluso’s homer came with the Huskies trailing 5-4 in the top of the fifth. Peluso drilled a two out dinger over the right centerfield fence to knot the score up at five. Neither team would be able to plate another run for the remainder of the contest.

Peluso also drove in the first run of the game as Kyle Messineo (Cedar Grove, NJ) came around to score on Peluso’s single into right.

MacDonald would give up two home runs to senior outfielder Rob Faist in each of the first two innings as Pace built a 5-2 advantage after the second. Faist ended the day with four RBI.

A Dave Tokarz (Seymour, CT) single and Peluso’s double keyed UConn’s two run third, drawing the Huskies within one run.

The Huskies are back in action when they travel to the University of Pittsburgh for the first game of a three game series on Saturday, May 15 at 12:00 noon.
