PITTSBURGH, PA (May 15) — Senior first baseman Marc Peluso
(Pawcatuck, CT) hit his third home run of the season and second in as
many games to lift the Huskies over league leading Pittsburgh 3-1 at
Trees Field in Pittsburgh, Pa. With the victory, the Huskies snap the
Panthers’ seven game winning streak and improve to 23-25-1 on the
season, 7-14 in BIG EAST play. The Panthers slip to 35-13 overall,
15-6 in the loop.
Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader was postponed. The two sides will
play two on Sunday beginning at noon in Pittsburgh.
Junior Jeff Hourigan (Beacon Falls, CT) hurled his sixth complete
game of the season, going seven innings and allowing one run on five
hits while fanning five. Jeff Evangelista was the hard-luck loser for
Pitt. Evangelista went the full seven and allowed three runs on only
two hits.
Peluso’ homer came in the third. After Dave Tokarz (Seymour, CT)
was hit by a pitch to lead off the third, Peluso hit a shot over the
left center field fence to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead. Kyle Messineo
(Cedar Grove, NJ) hit a sac fly that scored Larry Day (Amesbury, MA)
in the second.
Hourigan struggled to close the door on Pitt in the seventh. After
getting Nick Rybczak to ground out to short, Hourigan gave up three
consecutive walks to David Cline, Ben Copeland, and Bryan Spamer.
Cline would come around to score on a sac fly by P.J. Hiser but
Hourigan got Tom Cashman, the Panthers’ cleanup hitter, to fly out to
left.
Peluso went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored and Russ
D’Argento (Marlboro, MA) got the only other hit for the Huskies when
he led off the game with a double.
