PITTSBURGH, PA (May 16) — After falling 5-2 to Pittsburgh in Game 1
of Sunday’s doubleheader, the University of Connecticut baseball team
defeated the Panthers 6-2 in the series finale behind a complete game
performance from sophomore Brendan McGinn (Tolland, CT). With the
victory the Huskies take the weekend series from Pittsburgh and
improve to 24-26-1 on the year, 8-15 in league play. The Panthers, who
came into the weekend series as the BIG EAST leader, slip to 36-14
overall and 16-7 in the loop.
McGinn was outstanding in Sunday’s nightcap, scattering ten hits
over nine innings and striking out four. The southpaw gave up two runs
in the first, but settled down to shutout Pitt the rest of the way.
Trailing 2-1 after one inning, the Huskies put up three runs in the
second frame to take the lead for good. Matt Untiet (Berlin, CT) led
off the second with a single through the right side and Tim Dempsey
(Lexington, MA) followed that up with a single into right. Freshman
catcher Larry Day (Amesbury, MA) then drilled a two run double down
the left field line. Day would later score on a Tony Mallozzi (Westboro,
MA) single through the middle.
Day would add another two run double, this time in the right center
field gap, to give the Huskies some breathing room. Day went 2-for-4
in Game 2 with four RBI and one run scored.
The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of Game 1 and
would not look back. Peter Parise hit a one out single off Husky
starter Mike James (Roswell, GA) and came around to score on Mike
Scanzano’s double down the leftfield line. David Cline then hit a two
out single up the middle scoring Scanzano.
James went 5.1 innings for UConn and gave up five runs on ten hits
while striking out four. Andrew Kuss earned the win for Pitt, tossing
4.1 innings and giving up two runs on four hits.
The Huskies would cut Pittsburgh lead in half with a run in the
third. Russ D’Argento (Marlboro, MA) led off the third frame with a
walk and advanced to third on Marc Peluso’s single through the right
side. Jeff Hourigan (Beacon Falls, CT) who threw a complete game
victory against the Panters on Saturday, drilled a double down the
right field line scoring D’Argento. The rally came to a screeching
halt though when Peluso was picked off third base by Panther backstop
Alex Rybczak.
Down 3-1 in the fifth, the Huskies found themselves in business
with runners on second and third and one out. Peluso, hit a sac fly to
center allowing Kyle Messineo (Cedar Grove, NJ) to score and Pitt
elected to intentionally walk Hourigan. The threat ended when Bryan
Maler (Ansonia, CT) grounded out to short. Pitt would add insurance
runs in the fifth and sixth on homers by Tom Cashman and Alex Rybczak.
The Huskies are back in action on Tuesday, May 18 when they welcome
Vermont to Storrs for a 3:00 p.m. showdown.
