STORRS,
CT (May 18) -- Three Catamounts went deep on Wednesday to lead Vermont
past the University of Connecticut baseball team 7-3 at J.O. Christian
Field in Storrs. With the loss, the Huskies slip to 24-27-1 on the
season while UVM improves to 16-25.
Miguel Magrass, Kyle Brault, and Leif Ekelund each recorded home
runs for Vermont.
Vermont seized control of this contest with a three run first.
Bobby Tewksbary plated the Catamount's first run when he scored on an
error, and Dean Geoffrey made it 2-0 when he scored on an error as
well. UConn starter Tim Norton (Pascoag, RI) walked Matt Naimoli,
forcing in VMU's third run of the inning.
Norton would settle down though, allowing four runs, only two
earned in seven innings of work while surrendering five hits and
striking out six. Norton’s only other blemish of the outing was a one
out home run hit by Magrass in the seventh.
The Huskies answered with one run in the home half of the seventh
to make the score 4-2. Marc Peluso (Pawcatuck, RI) drew a bases loaded
walk, bringing up Husky cleanup hitter Jeff Hourigan (Beacon Falls,
CT). Hourigan drilled a sinking line drive into right, but Vermont
right fielder Kyle Brault came down with it to end the threat.
UVM scored twice in the ninth, making the score 7-3 and giving
itself some breathing room. Bret t Doben pitched the final two innings
and gave up one run on four hits for his first save of the year.
Josh MacDonald (Milford, CT) went 1.1 innings in relief of Norton
and gave up three runs on two hits. Joe Smeraglino (Shelton, CT) got
the final two outs for the Huskies.
Hourigan went 3-for-5 with a run scored and Matt Untiet (Berlin,
CT) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Freshman backstop Larry
Day (Amesbury, MA) continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-4 effort and
also drove in a run.
The Huskies are back in action on Thursday, May 19 when they take
on Northeastern in Storrs. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
