Boxscore [.pdf]

SHREVEPORT, La. (March 20, 2005) - Freshman Matt Karl (Wallingford, Conn.) hit a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning as the University of Connecticut baseball team rallied to defeat Centenary College on Sunday afternoon in Shreveport, La. With the victory, the Huskies win the series and move to 11-4 on the season, while the Gents fall to 8-11. The game, which was delayed for two hours by rain, was shortened to seven innings due to UConn travel arrangements.

After Centenary scored a run in the bottom of the first, the Huskies scored three in the top of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Larry Day (Amesbury, Mass.) scored on a single by fellow sophomore Matt Untiet (Berlin, Conn.), who was then driven in on a double by freshman Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa). Senior Tony Mallozzi (Westboro, Mass.) hit a single to bring home Mahoney and give UConn a two-run lead.

The Huskies then scored a single run in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but the Gents responded, scoring three runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth to move to score to 8-7 in favor of Centenary.

Then, in the top of the seventh inning with the bases loaded, Karl hit in his game-winning single to score Mallozzi and Untiet and give the Huskies the 9-8 victory.

Sophomore lefthander Ted Garry (Rochester, Minn.) picked up his first win of the season, pitching the final two innings of the game. Junior John Slusarz (Farmington, Conn.) started for UConn, throwing 4.2 innings with four runs on four hits and three strikeouts. Fellow junior Joe Smeraglino (Shelton, Conn.) also made an appearance in the game, pitching 0.1 innings while setting up for Garry.

Untiet led the UConn bats with a 3-for-3 performance with two runs and two RBI. Junior Austin Wasserman (Nashua, N.H.) also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-5. Mahoney drove in two runs while Day and Mallozzi scored two apiece.

Connecticut returns to Storrs for its home-opener on Tuesday, March 22. The Huskies play Massachusetts at 3:00 p.m. at J.O. Christian Field.
